报告摘要

Unsaturated soils exhibit complex hydro-mechanical behaviour arising from interactions between particles and pore fluids over multiple scales. This seminar presents recent advances in the micromechanical understanding and computational modeling of unsaturated granular materials using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and coupled Lattice Boltzmann-Discrete Element Method (LBM-DEM) approaches. The presentation explores capillary effects, stress transmission, and the interpretation of effective stress in partially saturated soils, from grain-scale mechanisms to macroscopic behaviour. It further discusses how these insights can be used to investigate constitutive behaviour, strain localization, instability, and failure. Finally, perspectives are offered on the application of second-order work concepts and related criteria for assessing material stability and developing engineering scale models for unsaturated geomaterials.

主讲人简介

Richard Wan is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary. He received a Civil Engineering degree from the École Nationale des Travaux Publics de lÉtat (France) in 1983, an M.Sc. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 1985, and a Ph.D. in Geomechanics from the University of Alberta in 1990. His research interests include geomechanics, micromechanics, constitutive modelling, computational mechanics, and thermodynamics-based approaches to complex systems. His work focuses on multiscale and multiphysics modeling of geomaterials, with applications in soil and rock mechanics, energy resource extraction, cold regions engineering, unsaturated soils, and pavement engineering. More recently, he has explored the use of thermodynamic concepts such as entropy and dissipation in geomechanics and complex systems, including the mechanistic modeling of pandemics.Professor Wan is the recipient of the inaugural Robert J. Melosh Medal in Finite Element Analysis from Duke University. He serves on the editorial boards of several international journals and is a member of ISSMGE Technical Committee TC103 on Numerical Methods. He has supervised more than 50 Ph.D. students, authored over 150 publications and three books, and collaborates extensively with researchers worldwide.
