This talk covers a variety of different aspects relevant for the numerical modelling of pile installation processes in a continuum mechanics framework. Lagrangian and Eulerian schemes to discretise the soil are discussed and various hydro-mechanically coupled finite element formulations are inspected for their suitability for application to vibratory pile driving in water-saturated soil. Two different mortar contact discretisation techniques are presented and a new framework for the formulation of constitutive interface models based on constitutive continuum models is introduced. Finally, the application of the numerical schemes to the simulation of the installation of offshore piles is presented.
