报告摘要
The speaker considers the time-dependent axial capacity of piles at clay and sand sites, focusing on the open steel piles employed for offshore, nearshore and bridge works. It reports and interprets field observations that offer crucial checks for design hypotheses and benchmarks for numerical modelling. It also emphasises the strengths of combining field experiments and full-scale monitoring with high quality in-situ and laboratory testing with representative numerical analysis. The cases considered identify the key ageing mechanisms at work and the circumstances under which they may affect design capacities, service use or the choices made for final decommissioning.

Richard Jardine is a British geotechnical engineering expert, professor at Imperial College London, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (elected in 2001), Fellow of the Royal Society (elected in 2024), Rankine Lecturer in 2016, and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the City Guilds.
He is a member of three technical committees under the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and served as the chairman of TC101 for 9 years. He is currently a member of the International Marine Geotechnical Committee (API, ISO and SUT). He also serves as a College Proconsul at Imperial College London and is co-chairman of the International Research Center for Marine Civil Engineering at Zhejiang University.
Professor Jardine has won 30 international and domestic awards and published more than 300 academic papers. His main research directions are: basic properties of soils, laboratory and field tests, offshore, pile foundation and soft soil engineering as well as flood defence design and geotechnical climate change impact in cold regions and development of geotechnical testing systems. Professor Jardine has developed several new methods for offshore pile foundation design and the analysis of soil-structure interaction. He is also a well-known activist in the international academic community. He is a member of many international professional societies and has served on the editorial boards of internationally renowned journals. He also serves as a visiting professor at many schools. He has given many major international talks including the Zeng Guoxi Lecture in 2008, the ISSMGE Bishop Honours Lecture in 2013, the BGA Rankine Lecture in 2016 and the ISSMGE McClelland Honours Lecturer in 2023.
